I have planted them early in Utah where they tolerated a couple of late snow storms. I am able to harvest early so I can make the most of my growing season. They are a beautiful onion with good, sweet flavor and fare well while being stored. Ordering this years crop now! Happy Gardening

After 8 months of storage at 68 F, only 3 have sprouted and 2 have rotted…out of about 90 onions. Planted in 2023. Average size onions which is perfect for me. Will plant the same this year.

This year’s crop is still solid with no sprouting – keep ’em in the basement in a single layer in cardboard boxes. I typically pull onions in late October and they’ll last til the following August. I’ve found the key to growing big tomatoes here in Wyoming is to dig in turkey droppings at the end of the growing season and then add a little more in the spring and mid-summer – onions are such nitrogen hogs.

Comment on Long Day Sampler Onion Plants by Dawn https://dixondalefarms.com/product/long-day-sampler-onion-plants/#comment-304616 Thu, 15 Feb 2024 14:17:34 +0000 https://dixondalefarms.com/?post_type=product&p=979#comment-304616 Gorgeous onions! 98% production rate here in Maryland 7a/7b zone.

In 2023, I purchased the long day sampler. It included walla walla, ring master & redwing varieties. The variation of storage time was what drew me to choose this sampler! (1 month for the walla walla variety, 4 months for the ring master variety & 8-10 months for the redwing variety). I still have at least a dozen in the cellar as of February 2024.

They were easy to grow and very low maintenance!

I found the starts easy to separate and identify, mostly because this sampler has a red variety, yellow variety & white variety.

I first harvested every other plant at a green onion stage because I planted a little too close together. At full harvest we had onions anywhere from 3” to 6”!

They worked out so well I Just placed my order for 2024!

Not nearly as big or long-storing as Copra which for some reason they discontinued. ?? Every year Copra were our most dependable yellow (or white) storage onions. We always had sound onions right into (Catskills) summer. sigh

I’ve had a crop of them for two years. They take much longer to mature than what is suggested. I plant them in March and pull them out in early October. The tops get huge and die and fall over. I still leave the bulbs in the ground. Then I dig them up before the first frost.

They have lasted me til March with firm and not soggy flesh–and maybe would’ve last longer but who knows as we ate them all. Stored in a bushel basket inside in 60s temperature.

If they get enough water they get huge. Very happy with them.
