Dixondale Farms is proud to have the exclusive on this onion variety! Back in 2009, the “Onionman” became frustrated with the reliability of an intermediate day red variety so he decided he would just develop his own. Seed companies weren’t interested in producing this variety because it just won’t bolt and if an onion won’t bolt, then you can’t produce seed. We overcame that by making the seed production a two year process which produced a remarkable seed crop this year. Red Candy Apple has proved to be a reliable red intermediate day onion year after year. Although slightly smaller in size, Red Candy onions can be pushed to grow larger in long days areas with additional nitrogen. Allow to grow to full maturity as Red Candy Apple finishes strong. When planted in short and intermediate day areas, it produces larger bulbs. Makes a great red bulb to be sold early at the farmers’ market in all areas. What it lacks in size, it will make up in appearance and flavor. Contains a higher concentration of quecetins, an antioxidant compound that helps delay or slow damage to the cells and tissue of the body.

Super Star is our most widely adaptable white variety that will grow well in almost all areas. While it performs best in intermediate day areas, Super Star is the most popular variety for commercial growers in Texas, New Mexico, California, and Colorado. Super Star is the only white onion ever to win the coveted All-American Selection. This is a proven variety for intermediate and northern short day areas. Super Star onions’ strong tall foliage will protect the bulbs from sunburning. Its dark colored foliage and shiny white bulbs make it an attractive onion to sell with the foliage still on.

The most popular and recommended variety we offer is Candy! This onion is great for anyone that has never had much success growing onions. Candy onion plants are so easy to grow due to their strong root system and disease resistance. Unless you live in the southern most portions of the short day area or the northern most portions of the long day area, Candy will produce beyond your expectations. Long day areas should plant Candy onion plants as early as possible so it can reach full size potential. Every year it amazes us how many of these we sell! Authorized to be used in the Pennsylvania Sweet program.

We’ve made it easy for those who want to plant all three of our famous intermediate onion plant varieties, but may not have enough space to plant an entire bunch of each variety. Our Intermediate Day Sampler bundle includes a minimum of four dozen onion plants consisting of a mixture of Candy, Super Star, and Red Candy Apple onion varieties, providing a nice combination of color and flavor. The bunch may not have exactly 16 plants of each variety, but the bundle will have at least four dozen plants. Seed is mixed at planting therefore, we cannot guarantee the number of each variety. We will no longer offer samplers at case lot pricing. If you want a 30 bunch box of these three varieties, just order a mixed case.
