Description

Red River onion are a highly adaptable onion variety that can be planted in both intermediate day and long day regions since it is considered a long “intermediate day” or a short “long day.” For customers that remember our very popular variety called Mars, this is the red onion variety that we feel comes closest to that maturity slot, flavor, and size. Red River onion plants boasts a strong root system and a nice dark, red color. High yield potential and good storage potential. Resistant to pink root, fusarium, and bolting.

I really miss Mars. Red River works though. I just dug up some of those well-rooted roots before this latest Arctic Blast hit and brought them into the greenhouse to use for green onions. They and some other onions that missed getting pulled up before winter survived chickens and cattle, and were beginning to leaf out. I find the Red River variety to be a sweeter red onion than many others, though it seems to have a thick neck at harvest time. I am ordering more this year because they did keep in storage with no signs of growth and I am eating the last one this week. I had to really dig to uproot the survivors in the field, but they’ll grow nicely for some quick greens in the greenhouse, I am sure!

Here it is mid March of 2023 and we are still eating the Red River onions we pulled last fall. Great for storage and they taste great
    I will be ordering more.

The biggest, best tasting onions I have ever grown (and I’ve grown a lot of onions.) I’m ordering twice as many this year!

I have been ordering these beauties for a couple of years now, and as another reviewer mentioned, it is now March 6, 2023 and I still have a few of these in storage. I have planted them early in Utah where they tolerated a couple of late snow storms. I am able to harvest early so I can make the most of my growing season. They are a beautiful onion with good, sweet flavor and fare well while being stored. Ordering this years crop now! Happy Gardening
